Our Review of YouTubeGet

The first thing you see when you run YouTubeGet is it’s clean and tasteful icon’d interface - a welcome change from most bland layouts. The “Add New Download” box is dead simple. I had just copied a YouTube URL when YouTubeGet instantly added it before I knew what was happening.

The bottom line is clear: YouTubeGet is a great little downloader/converter

YouTubeGet also comes with a separate YouTube-specific browser. It’s not really necessary since the main YouTubeGet window does such a seamless job of grabbing YouTube videos, but for browsing and downloading YouTube videos, it’s handy.

The “Auto Convert To” pull-down menu is very sweet; a simple video format conversion menu with corresponding devices: MP3 (music file), WMV (Zune, Pocket PC), MOV (Quicktime, iPod, iPhone), MP4 (PSP, MP4 Player), 3GP (cell phone), AVI (Windows Media Player AVI) or just plain old FLV. All the video and audio settings are there - video bitrate, audio bitrate, audio channel, audio sampling rate, frame rate and screen size - and you can see them change with each conversion selection. More importantly, you can adjust them. Nice.

Conversions are very fast and excellent quality. There was never a video glitch or audio burp in any of the finished conversion files we tested. And the program never once gave us a problem - it worked flawlessly all day long. This might not sound like a big deal, but across the hundreds of converter programs we test, there is a shocking amount of error blips and crashes.

YouTubeGet is exactly that - a ‘getter’ for YouTube videos. None of the other major video aggregator sites that we tested worked; not Google Video, not Yahoo Video, not Metacafe, not even Ebaum’s World. That’s a bit of a letdown but let’s face it - YouTubeGet does exactly what it advertises and it does that very well. Compared to all the other YouTube downloaders and converters out there - and there is a boatload of them - the bottom line is clear: YouTubeGet is a great little downloader/converter.
