Our Review of YouTube Robot

Let’s get first impressions out of the way now - the skin on this converter is a hang-over from the turn of the decade [1999-2000] when space-gadget design ruled. It doesn’t look like a piece of software; it looks like a bastardized Star Trek communicator. “Dear YouTube Robot - Please Update.”

What’s really impressive is the menu of format conversions available - from the smallest video screen size of 128×96 to full 1920×1080 High Definition and everything in between.

Leaving aside the skin, this is a terrific YouTube downloader and converter. Its fast. Its easy. It converts to an incredibly wide variety of formats and popular mobile phones/portable media players.

Because the space-gadget skin can’t be defiled by petty visuals such as standard navigation headings like “File”, it forces you to button hover in order to find out what’s what. No matter; the learning curve on that is only 12 seconds.

What’s really impressive is the menu of format conversions available - from the smallest video screen size of 128×96 to full 1920×1080 High Definition and everything in between. All the compatible video formats - AVI, WMV, MP4, 3GP - for all the major mobile devices - iPod, iPhone, BlackBerry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC, LG, Samsung, Zune, Zen, iRiver, ARchos, etc - are present. Even the game consoles are included: PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS - all with standard and High Definition video formats. The common video formats include ASF, AVI, DVD Video, Divx, MOV-Quicktime, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, VCD Video and XviD. But the common problem amongst the “YouTube Download and Convert” programs is that outside of YouTube, they don’t work well with other video sites. And we’re not talking about the hundreds and thousands of video sharing sites exploding around the world. Amongst the more established, popular video sites such as Metacafe, Break, Ebaumsworld, Revver, LiveLeak, Veoh, CollegeHumor, Vimeo and others, there will be some that work and some that don’t. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of it. This is an issue across all of these YouTube conversion programs and one that needs to be solved now.

YouTube Robot suffers from this. While it works wonderfully for anything on YouTube, it’s hit and miss on other video sites. Vimeo worked. Metacafe didn’t. Neither did CollegeHumor.

Overall, YouTube Robot performed well with very fast conversions and high video quality. The list of video formats and devices it covers is even better. Now if only these YouTube-centric programs could get along with the other sites out there in the video-sharing universe.
